AUBREY CALAWAY
Aubrey Calaway is an American writer and curator. Working out of his studio in Portland, Maine he is often in Texas, New York City, and Los Angeles.
Moving between fiction, playwriting, and non-fiction essaying, Calaway is broadly interested in uncertainty, the extreme, and the blurring of what is human and what is not. His curatorial work often focuses on how sex, reality, and the human are manufactured and performed in contemporary culture in the United States.
His written works often employ prose, verse, parafiction, and comedy. His original play, This is Improv!, debuted at Portfringe 2026, where it won the Patron’s Choice Award. Calaway has also performed original monologues at SPACE, Portland Museum of Art, Blue, and Empire Comedy Club. He is the host of secret salon.
His writing has appeared in the Texas Observer, the Houston Chronicle, Cite Magazine, Weathered, and the inaugural Maine trans poetics anthology. He was the 2023 Salt Artist-in-Residence at Monson Arts, and the editor-in-chief of Particulate Matter, a nationally-distributed, print-only literary zine, from 2020 to 2022.
Calaway currently serves as the founding director of the Violet Institute for contemporary trans culture. He also directed Foghorn, an audio documentary collective and co-working space, from 2024 to 2026. Calaway has done scripting and editing work for TransLash Media, MIT, ICA Miami, and Black Mountain Institute.
He graduated with honors from Brown University and went on to study at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies at Maine College of Art & Design, where he occasionally lectures.
